About Isolite
Isolite manufactures self-luminous exit signs built around tritium radioluminescence, a technology that eliminates the need for electrical power entirely. Rather than relying on wiring, backup batteries, or photoluminescent charging from ambient light, Isolite signs illuminate through a permanently sealed internal light source. Borosilicate glass tubes inside each sign are coated with phosphor and filled with tritium gas, a naturally occurring hydrogen isotope. As the tritium undergoes low-level beta decay, the emitted electrons continuously excite the phosphor coating, producing steady, visible illumination around the clock for the rated lifespan of the sign. The result is a sign that is always on, requires no power source, generates no electrical load, and demands no maintenance for its entire service life. Isolite signs are UL 924 listed, compliant with NFPA Life Safety Code 101, and meet OSHA egress marking requirements, making them a code-compliant option wherever exit signs are required by law.
Isolite products are used in a wide range of environments where conventional electrical exit signs present challenges, including stairwells, tunnels, mechanical rooms, outdoor structures, cold storage facilities, wet locations, hazardous atmospheres, and any facility where consistent electrical supply cannot be guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions About Isolite Products
How does a self-luminous exit sign work without electricity?
Isolite signs use tritium gas sealed inside borosilicate glass tubes coated with phosphor. Tritium undergoes natural beta decay, emitting low-energy electrons that continuously excite the phosphor coating and produce visible light. No external power source, battery, or light charging is needed at any point. The sign illuminates the moment it is installed and continues to do so for the duration of its rated lifespan. Is tritium safe?
Yes. The beta radiation emitted by tritium has such low energy that it cannot penetrate a sheet of paper, let alone the sign's housing. Isolite signs are regulated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and meet all federal and state radioactive materials safety standards. In the unlikely event of tube damage, tritium gas is lighter than air, disperses rapidly, and poses no meaningful exposure risk. These signs are approved for use in schools, hospitals, commercial buildings, and public facilities across all 50 states and Canada. For buildings that require a photoluminescent rather than tritium-based egress solution, Koffler also carries a full range of photoluminescent exit signs and markings from other brands.
